Easy 8 Breakfast series #1 - Meet our #woMNonthego

In June, I hosted the first in a series of #woMNonthego events. For this drop in breakfast, I invited 8 industry leaders and innovators to style a unique look with pieces from my Easy 8 collection. The Easy 8 is designed with women on the go in mind, 8 pieces that make up 22 looks to ensure you're outfit ready for any appointment on the calendar, breakfast and beyond.

Over coffee, the conversation ranged from juggling careers and an on-the-go lifestyle to running businesses and weathering breakups (personal and professional). In addition I asked my guests a few questions about who inspires them, their favorite Easy 8 piece and what being on the go means to them. This blog features 4 of our 8 guests, stay tuned for the next!

Lisa Wang, SheWorx Founder

Most Inspiring Woman? Why?

Oprah – she's a media mogul, business titan, philanthropist. She overcame numerous challenges and paved the way for women, and especially African-American women, to have a voice in mainstream media.

What do you look for from your wardrobe?

I look for sophistication mixed with sass. As an entrepreneur in NYC, I like mixing classic black & white pieces with a kick of attitude.

Favourite Easy 8 piece?

The Elena Dress - chic, comfortable and classic with an attitude. It also goes great with Jimmy Choo pumps or sneakers!

What does a modern ‘woman on the go’ look like to you?

She is calm, confident and comfortable in her own skin and whatever she chooses to wear.

What is one thing you’re learning now, either personally or professionally, or both?

I'm learning how important it is to have clear boundaries in both personal and professional life. You need to take time to deeply reflect on your values in order to lead with integrity and surround yourself with people who espouse the same values.

Rachelle Hruska Macpherson, Guest of a Guest / Lingua Franca

Most Inspiring Woman? Why?

Any woman that is unapologetically authentic to herself is inspiring to me. Also, I think the everyday unsung women of the world, who wake up each morning and start caring for others right away, all day every day, are true heroes.

What do you look for from your wardrobe?

I want my wardrobe to inspire me and make me feel happy.

Favourite Easy 8 piece?

The husband shirt.

What does a modern ‘woman on the go’ look like to you?

I think that clothes should be an extension of a woman’s personality. They should complement, not take away from her. They should be comfortable and make her feel like she can conquer the world.

What is one thing you’re learning now, either personally or professionally, or both?

That there are many things that I can’t control but that I CAN control how I react to them. I always try to remember how short life is and put things in perspective when I’m in the thick of a heavy situation, in work or life.

Lauren Singer, Trash is For Tossers

Most Inspiring Woman? Why?

I am more inspired by the actions of people than people themselves, and so I don't have to look hard to find something to admire in every woman.

What do you look for from your wardrobe?

I bike to work every day so I want something that is easy to wash, easy to throw on, neutral colors, and comfortable. I really like items that are backless or thin strapped.

Favourite Easy 8 piece?

I was up all night watching Dynasty, so it's obviously the power suit, Kiki pants and Florence Blazer combo ;)

What does a modern ‘woman on the go’ look like to you?

Well, today it's 90 degrees and sunny in Brooklyn and sitting in my office right now I'm wearing my hair in pigtail braids, layered gold hoop earrings, a white cotton halter top, black linen pants, and a pair of organic slip on sneakers. Easy, but I still feel sexy, confident, and professional.

What is one thing you’re learning now, either personally or professionally, or both?

As a business owner, it is so easy to forget my own needs and the dialogue around the importance of self-care is not as prominent as it should be when it comes to women in business (or really, everyone in business). One of my favorite sayings is: "you can't run a race if your leg is broken" and it has become more and more obvious to me that I need to prioritize my self-care as much as I do my businesses, my team, and my partner. Right now I come about 14th, I'm working on moving that ranking up.

Alexa von Tobel, LearnVest Founder

Most Inspiring Woman? Why?

My mom, of course. All people love their moms but, as I get older, I admire her more and more—especially now that I am a mother of two. My mom raised three energetic kids while working as a paediatric nurse practitioner serving underprivileged children. Today, as a working mom, I marvel at how she did it all. She somehow worked, ironed our clothing, ran a pristinely clean house, hand-packed our lunches, attended every athletic match and made us feel loved.

What do you look for from your wardrobe?

I love fashion and love to feel feminine so I tend to wear mostly skirts and dresses, but I look for fabrics that are easy and travel well since I’m always on the go. Whenever I look at purchasing new clothes—I ask myself, is it chic? Is it practical? And, can it handle baby spit up?

Favourite Easy 8 piece?

My black jumpsuit! I love the clean lines. It’s a testament to how you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort.

What does a modern ‘woman on the go’ look like to you?

BUSY! I am thrilled to be a woman in this decade of life. Our voices are heard. We have a seat at the table. And, our access to technology lets us better connect, share ideas, grow alliances and generally help each other out whether that’s offering some advice or a referral, or showing up in real life. We’re mastering our universe—or, at least trying to – from our phones.

What is one thing you’re learning now, either personally or professionally, or both?

I've been an active angel investor for five years now, and I love supporting other entrepreneurs. Since selling LearnVest to Northwestern Mutual, I've had the most fun helping great founders build. There’s nothing like seeing a germ of an idea bloom. Nothing is better!
